The equity benchmark indices settled flat on Wednesday, May 28, dragged down by consumer stocks following large block deals.

At close, the S&P BSE SENSEX stood at 81,312.32, falling 239.31 points, or 0.29%, while the NSE's NIFTY50 index declined 73.75 points, or 0.3%, to 24,752.45 levels.
Diversified conglomerate ITC declined 4.8% during the intraday period on the NSE as 2.57% equity, i.e., 33.25 crore shares, changed hands at the block deal for ₹13,863 crore, according to news reports. Read more

The broader market ended the session mixed, although the market breadth remained in favour of positive.

According to exchange data, on Tuesday, the foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought equities worth ₹348.45 crore on a net basis, while the domestic institutional investors (DIIs) purchased ₹10,104.66 crore worth of equities.

On the global front, the US markets ended with sharp gains after President Donald Trump delayed his tariffs on the European Union, giving a boost to investors' sentiment.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 740.58 points, or 1.78%, to 42,343.65, the S&P 500 rose 118.72 points, or 2.05%, to 5,921.54 and the Nasdaq Composite jumped 461.96 points, or 2.47%, to 19,199.16.

Tracking the US indices, the Asian stocks settled mixed. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng slipped 0.53% to 23,258.31 levels, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 ended flat. The Shanghai Composite was up marginally lower by 0.02% to end at the 3,339.93 level. South Korea’s Kospi index gained 1.23% to 2,670.15 levels.

Market statistics

As many as 2,940 stocks traded on the NSE on Wednesday. Out of this, 1,462 advanced and 1,395 stocks declined, while 83 scrips remained unchanged.

This indicated that the market breadth was in favour of positive.

A total of 51 stocks hit their 52-week highs, while 17 stocks touched their one-year lows. Besides, 93 stocks hit their upper circuit limits, and 47 touched their lower circuit bands on Wednesday.

NSE-listed firms' market capitalisation stood at ₹441.33 lakh crore at the end of the session.

India VIX, the volatility gauge, stood at 18.02 levels, declining 2.79%.

Broader market

The Nifty Midcap 100 index closed marginally lower by 0.02% at 57,141.40 levels, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 index gained 0.33% to end at 17,784 levels.

Sectoral watch

Nifty FMCG was the biggest loser among sectors, falling 1.49%. Nifty Auto (-0.68%), Nifty Pharma (-0.61%), Nifty Metal (-0.60%) and Nifty Consumer Durables (-0.53%) were the other top laggards.

Meanwhile, Nifty Media (1.04%) and Nifty PSU Bank (0.97%) were the only gainers on Wednesday.

Top gainers and losers
On the NIFTY50 index, 16 stocks advanced while 34 ended in red.
IndusInd Bank led the pack of biggest losers on the 50-share index, falling 1.93%. Apollo Hospitals (-1.89%), UltraTech Cement (-1.82%), Hindalco Industries (-1.65%) and Nestle India (-1.62%) were among the top losers.

On the flip side, HDFC Life Insurance (1.51%), Bharat Electronics (1.27%), Bajaj Finance (1.21%), Hero MotoCorp (0.87%) and Bharti Airtel (0.63%) were the top contributors on the index.
