SUMMARY

Indian travellers are embracing new horizons, moving beyond traditional destinations like Bangkok and the Maldives. Shillong (India), Baku (Azerbaijan), Langkawi (Malaysia), Tashkent (Uzbekistan), Colombo (Sri Lanka), and Krabi (Thailand) are seeing huge surges in popularity. Factors like visa-free access, affordability, enhanced connectivity, and unique cultural and natural attractions are driving this shift towards lesser-known yet captivating, global and domestic gems.

Indian travellers are ditching the well-trodden paths of Bangkok, the Maldives, and other traditional holiday spots. Instead, they've unearthed a treasure trove of lesser-known destinations within India and abroad. Whether it's for a quick long weekend or an extended summer break, a shift in travel preferences is evident, with smaller, alternative locations capturing the hearts of Indian travellers.

Shillong, India or 'Scotland of the East'

Imagine rolling hills, misty waterfalls, and serene lakes – that's Shillong, Meghalaya, for you. This stunning destination, fondly known as the 'Scotland of the East,' has become much sought-after. The Indian government is actively boosting its eco-tourism appeal through initiatives like Swadesh Darshan 2.0 and the Travel for LiFE program, aiming to attract visitors while preserving its natural beauty.

The numbers speak for themselves: Shillong saw an astonishing 828% jump in flight searches on Skyscanner in the last year. Its picture-perfect spots have turned it into a social media sensation, drawing in nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. In a significant win, Skyscanner's Travel Trends report crowned Shillong the top destination for Indian travellers in 2025, even surpassing international favourite Baku. Government data reveals Meghalaya welcomed 1.6 million tourists in 2024, a 33% increase from pre-COVID levels. With the state government pouring ₹450 crore into new tourism projects for 2024-25, Shillong's star is only set to rise.

Baku, Azerbaijan: An affordable cultural experience

Looking for a European experience without the hefty price tag? Indians are finding their answer in Baku, Azerbaijan. This vibrant city offers a captivating blend of European charm, rich history, and unique cultural vibes, all at a remarkably affordable price. The growth in Indian visitors is astonishing. Azerbaijan saw 117,302 Indian tourists in 2023, nearly doubling the 2022 figures of 60,731. This surge continued into 2024, with 243,000 Indians visiting the country. Skyscanner data shows a massive 744% increase in searches for Baku in 2025. What's the draw? A straightforward e-visa process that takes as little as three hours, coupled with budget-friendly accommodation, dining and transport, means Indians can enjoy a foreign country without overspending.

It's worth noting that recent reports suggest a slight decline in bookings due to perceived geopolitical tensions, but the overall trend has been one of significant growth.

Langkawi, Malaysia: Tropical bliss with easy access

For those dreaming of pearl-white sand beaches, lush green rainforests and a breezy tropical climate, Langkawi, Malaysia, is quickly becoming a go-to spot. Malaysia's game-changing visa-free policy for Indian citizens until 2026 has made travel planning simple and hassle-free.

This ease of access, combined with numerous weekly flights connecting India to Malaysia, has paid off handsomely. Malaysia welcomed over 1 million Indian tourists in 2024, according to Malaysia's Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. This marks a nearly 72% increase compared to 2023 and a 47% surge over pre-pandemic numbers in 2019. According to official estimates, Langkawi received over 1.24 lakh tourist arrivals from India in the first six months of 2024, compared to 1.32 lakh in 2023. Ever since the launch of Bengaluru-Langkawi direct flights last year, the number of Indian tourists has only gone up.

Tashkent, Uzbekistan: Stepping onto the Silk Road

Uzbekistan, a pivotal hub on the ancient Silk Road, is charming Indian travellers with its stunning architectural marvels and rich cultural tapestry. Cities like Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva, all UNESCO World Heritage Sites, offer a deep dive into Islamic architecture and ancient civilisations.

The numbers reflect a soaring interest. Uzbekistan's tourism ministry reported 47,000 Indian visitors in 2023, which grew to 82,000 in 2024. Interestingly, flight-comparison and booking website Skyscanner has seen a 158% increase in flight searches for Uzbekistan. But what’s behind this surge? Well, Uzbekistan is a budget-friendly destination with a favourable exchange rate, allowing Indians to experience a rich culture without breaking the bank. Further, a convenient e-visa facility with minimal online documentation simplifies the process. Besides, there are now more flights from major Indian cities to Tashkent. Uzbekistan's Ministry of Tourism is also proactively promoting the country by participating in major travel fairs.

Colombo, Sri Lanka: The quick island escape

Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo, is proving to be a quick, affordable and enticing getaway for Indian travellers. The combination of visa-free access and new direct flights from major Indian cities is making the island nation incredibly popular.

Sri Lanka welcomed nearly 4.2 lakh Indian visitors in 2024, solidifying India's position as the dominant source market, contributing over 20% of total foreign visitors. This represents a 38% growth compared to 2023. Indian travellers find comfort in Sri Lankan cuisine, which shares familiar flavours, and appreciate the favourable exchange rate. Beyond the bustling capital, Sri Lanka's stunning coastline and beautiful beaches are a major draw for leisure travellers. Flight searches for Colombo saw a 120% increase on Skyscanner in the last year, highlighting its growing appeal.

Krabi, Thailand: Not the usual Thai hotspot

For those seeking a tropical escape with pristine beaches and vibrant nightlife, Krabi offers a refreshing alternative to the more crowded hotspots like Phuket and Bangkok. India has emerged as a crucial driver for Thailand's overall tourism recovery, with Krabi drawing Indians to southern Thailand.

In 2024, India accounted for over 1 million arrivals to Thailand, marking a 37% increase over 2023. India now ranks as the third-largest source market for Thailand. Krabi's allure lies in its dramatic limestone karsts, emerald waters and serene island vibes, promising a tropical paradise that's both breathtaking and increasingly accessible for Indian adventurers.

As the world shrinks and wanderlust grows, Indian travellers are trading familiar postcards for fresh hotspots. With easier visas, a keen eye for value and a desire for unique experiences, they're not just booking trips but writing a new chapter in global travel. The message is clear: pack your bags, because the usual is out, and the extraordinary is definitely in.
