About Avenue Supermarts

Avenue Supermarts Limited (ASL) owns and operates supermarkets across India under the brand name DMart. Radhakishan Damani founded the company in 2002, opening its first store in Powai, Mumbai. It is one of the largest entities in the retails sector. Apart from DMart, the company also owns brands like D Mart, D Mart Minimax, D Mart Premia, D Homes and Dutch Harbour.

In December 2016, the company initiated its online retail venture, DMart Ready, enabling customers to purchase groceries and household items over the internet. Following this, the company went public with its initial public offering (IPO) in March 2017. After its listing on March 22, 2017, it became the 65th most valuable firm in India.

As of December 18, 2023, the market capitalisation of DMart stood at ₹2.6 lakh crore. DMart share price has surged over 52% in the last three years.

Business operations

DMart offers a wide range of products such as food, garments, toys and games, stationery, footwear, beauty and home utility products, under one roof. It specialises in providing footwear, kitchenware, beauty items, toiletries, as well as bed and bath linen products.

In the financial year 2022-23, food products (groceries, staples, processed foods, dairy, frozen products, beverages & confectionery, and fruits & vegetables) accounted for 56.03% of the revenue of DMart. Non-food items in the fast-moving consumer goods category (home care products, personal care products, toiletries, and other over-the-counter products) contributed 20.93%. General merchandise and apparel (bed & bath, toys & games, crockery, plastic goods, garments, footwear, utensils, and home appliances) collectively constituted 23.04% of the revenue in FY23.

Avenue Supermarts Limited’s subsidiaries include Avenue Food Plaza Pvt Ltd, Align Retail Traders Pvt Ltd, Avenue E-Commerce Ltd, Nahar Seth & Jogani Developers Private Limited and Reflect Wholesale And Retail Private Limited.

DMart stores are present across 338 locations spanning Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Delhi-NCR, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Rajasthan. DMart took eight years to start its first 10 stores. From FY 2017-18 onwards, DMart's store count more than doubled to 324 by FY23.

Avenue Supermarts Ltd. has a strong operational backbone supported by a network of 49 distribution centres and 10 packing centres as of March 31, 2023. As the FY 2022-23, DMart's workforce comprised 12,108 permanent employees, with an additional 48,793 individuals employed on a contractual basis.

Financial highlights

Consolidated revenue of the company for FY 2022-23 stood at ₹42,839 crore, up 38.2% from ₹30,976 crore in FY 2021-22. Its annualised revenue from sales per retail business area square foot stood at ₹31,096 in FY 2022-23, compared to ₹27,454 in FY 2021-22. The company reported a profit of ₹2,378 crore in FY23 as against a profit of ₹1,492 crore in FY22. Its EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) stood at ₹3,127 crore in FY23 as against ₹2,117 crore in the previous fiscal. Avenue Supermarts Ltd. made a total capital expenditure of ₹39,841 crore in FY23. Its earnings per share (EPS) stood at ₹36.72 in FY23 compared to ₹23.04 in the previous financial year.
